My favorite restaurants in Copenhagen

Restaurants have been closed in Copenhagen since late December (except for takeaway) and oh my goodness do I miss eating out!! Even takeout/delivery is getting boring now. I have my fingers crossed that we’ll be able to enjoy the whole “restaurant experience” again soon — I would even be so excited for outdoor dining, especially since we’re starting to get more sunny days here in Copenhagen! (It doesn’t matter if it’s warm — the sun is enough for some outdoor hygge!)

So this is a list of my favorite restaurants in Copenhagen — some of which I haven’t been to in forever and can’t wait to visit again once things open up.

Coffee & Bakeries

That time my friend and I tried pastries from all the bakeries below and concluded that they’re all amazing…

Andersen & Maillard: Amazing bakery and coffee with locations in Nørrebro and Nordhavn. I recommend their Kouign Amann!!

Copenhagen Coffee Lab: We’ve been buying our coffee beans from here for almost 3 years and have no intention to stop!!

Hart Bageri: Another fantastic bakery! Their main location is in Frederiksberg, and they opened a second location in Christianshavn (across the pedestrian bridge from Nyhavn). Try their dobbelbagt (double baked) croissants!

Juno the Bakery: Okay so, I love bakeries and Copenhagen clearly has no shortage of them. This one is located in Østerbro and their cardamom buns are to die for (they also freeze well, if you’re like me and can’t get over there very often!).

Breakfast & Brunch

John & Woo: Delicious restaurant in Amagerbro with some brunch options that wouldn’t be out of place on an American menu, like Eggs Benedict and steak & eggs.

Mad og Kaffe: This place is popular for a reason. They do the small plates-style brunch where you can pick 3, 5, or 7 items, which I love because you can have both sweet and savory. And everything is good! Just be prepared for a wait if you go at peak times.

Packhouse: Loooove this brunch place in Christianshavn (I almost don’t want other people to know about it).

Casual/Cheaper Lunch & Dinner

Slurp ramen

Grød: Grød means “porridge” in Danish, which sounds like a funny concept for a restaurant, but Grød has everything from oatmeal to risotto to daal, and they do not miss. I also have their cookbook and everything I’ve made from it has been awesome. They also have a bunch of locations in Copenhagen (and beyond) so you’re bound to be near one no matter where you are in the city.

Olioli: I’m a big fan of poké and this chain is my favorite! I feel like there aren’t a ton of “fast casual” restaurant options like we are used to in the US, so poké is one of my go-tos when I want something quick and easy for takeaway.

Hija de Sanchez: I often gripe about the lack of good Mexican food in Copenhagen, but there are good tacos. Hija de Sanchez is one place you can get them. Located at Torvehallerne in the city center and Kødbyen in Vesterbro.

Pastor: Another solid taco spot, owned by Mexicans! This one is located in Amagerbro.

Ramen to Biiru: I looooove ramen, especially during the cold winter months in Denmark, and this chain doesn’t disappoint. They have several locations around Copenhagen!

Slurp Ramen: Couldn’t resist putting my other favorite ramen place on here. Slurp only has one (small) location in the city center, but it’s sooo good, and worth the wait if you have to stand in line outside for a bit.

Sliders: There is no shortage of burger places in Copenhagen, but Sliders makes the list because I think it’s the most unique! As the name suggests, they serve mini burgers (sliders) and a standard “meal” includes 3 sliders and fries. These are high-quality burgers with unique flavor combinations that I haven’t tried anywhere else! Located in Nørrebro.

Nicer/Pricier Lunch & Dinner

Bæst: I know this may be controversial, but I think Bæst is the best pizza I’ve ever had. They produce their own charcuterie and dairy (their burratta is one of my favorite things I’ve ever eaten) and everything on the menu is just *chef’s kiss.* And yes, it’s pizza, but I put it under the “nicer” category because it’s so high quality and the prices reflect that 😛 Not a cheap pizza place, but well worth it. Located in Nørrebro.

Köd: This is a really, really good steak restaurant. We’ve been here on a few celebratory occasions and always leave happy. Located in the city center and Vesterbro.

Sticks n Sushi: Funnily enough, the first time I went to Sticks n Sushi was in London. My Danish husband, then-boyfriend, suggested we go to a “Danish sushi place in Covent Garden” and I was extremely skeptical, but we went anyway. It far exceeded my expectations and is still one of my favorite restaurants! They have a bunch of locations in Copenhagen (and obviously beyond!).

Letz Sushi: Clearly I love sushi, and Letz is my other go-to spot (I would say Letz is a bit more casual than Sticks). The sushi and all the other food I’ve tried is awesome and I am particularly obsessed with their yuzu lemonade. Letz also has several locations.

The Market (Asian): The Market has an Asian part and an Italian part (located next door to each other in the city center), and I’ve only been to the Asian one. But it was fantastic and I can’t wait to go back. No doubt their Italian restaurant is excellent as well, so I can’t wait to try it sometime.

Paté Paté: I don’t even really know how to explain Paté Paté … I’ve heard it described as Danish meets French meets Spanish cuisine? They have quite a unique selection of food, served tapas style, in a very cool atmosphere in Kødbyen, Vesterbro.

Dessert

S’mores pie at the American Pie Company

The American Pie Company: No one should be surprised that this made my list 😛 Fantastic pies and a “slice” of home in Copenhagen!! I’m one of their biggest fans. (They also have savory pies that are delicious!)

Ismageriet: It took me a long time to learn how to pronounce this one (something like “EES-mayor-REE-it” if I had to write it in English), but not long to figure out that this is some of the best ice cream in town. Their Amager location in DR Byen isn’t the most convenient but it is definitely worth the trip (they also have a shop in Søborg).

So that’s my list, but I also can’t wait to try some new places whenever I can! So what are your favorites that aren’t on this list??
