Gluten-free Copenhagen: Pizza edition
So, I’ll start by saying that I am a gluten eater. I have no issue with gluten. But my husband, Christian, unfortunately does, so naturally that affects both of us since we tend to eat together a lot (#marriage).
One of the major inconveniences with this is the limited pizza options. There is SUCH GOOD PIZZA in Copenhagen, but if we want to have pizza together, there are only a few places we can choose from (I go to the other places with friends any opportunity I get.)
So that brings me to… the Gluten-free Copenhagen series. I’m going to try, rate, and review restaurants in Copenhagen with gluten-free offerings and try to find the best options in different categories. First up is pizza. After that, TBD… bakeries? Burger buns? Pasta? Let me know your suggestions!
So without further ado, here is the pizza matchup. (You can skip to the bottom if you just want the final verdicts 😛 )
The rules:
- I will try a regular pizza and a gluten-free pizza from each restaurant. We’re trying to find the best GF pizza, but I also (selfishly) want to sample the gluten-full options. I’ll pick the regular pizza and Christian will choose the GF pizza.
- Since we did this during Covid lockdown, we were only able to do takeaway/delivery. Obviously the pizza would have been better if we’d been able to try it in-house, but at least it was an even playing field 🙂
- The crusts are the focus here, since that’s the gluten-free challenge, but we’ll score the pizzas based on overall flavor.
- We’re rating on a scale of 1-5. 1 = terrible, would not eat again. 2 = fine, but wouldn’t choose to get it again. 3 = good, would eat again, but nothing to write home about. 4 = pretty good and would gladly eat again! 5 = basically a perfect pizza and would eat this exclusively.
The contenders:
Listed in the order we tried them…
Gorm’s
(Image above! Regular pizza on bottom, gluten free pizza on top)
Location: Gorm’s has many locations, but we got pizza from the Nyhavn one.
Method: delivery
Flavors: Margherita Bufala (regular crust), Miss Wishbone (gluten-free crust)
Review: First, I should note that we had tried gluten-free pizza from Gorm’s before. It was a couple years ago, and we’ve only gotten Gorm’s that one time, because we weren’t that impressed with it, to be honest. So we didn’t have high expectations this time around.
However!! We were pleasantly surprised by both the regular pizza and the gluten-free one. The regular pizza has a very thin crust, and it’s a bit crispy around the edges, which isn’t my preferred style of pizza crust (I like thin crust but chewy/fluffy edges). But the pizza had great flavor and I still really enjoyed it!
The gluten-free pizza also had a thin crust that was a bit softer/chewier than the regular crust. It was honestly a pretty good crust– definitely better than we remembered from the previous time we tried Gorm’s. Maybe it’s a new recipe? The Miss Wishbone also had great flavor from the toppings.
Overall, Gorm’s exceeded expectations!! We would gladly eat the regular and gluten-free pizzas again.
Rating: I give the regular pizza a 3/5. Christian gives the gluten-free pizza a 4/5.
Behov
Location: Behov has 2 locations. We picked up from the Vesterbro “to go” location.
Method: takeaway
Flavors: Grethe (similar to margherita, with regular crust), Blærerøv (bresaola, arugula, and balsamic, with gluten-free crust)
Review: This was both of our first time trying Behov! I’m sad to say I wasn’t very impressed, though. For the regular pizza, the crust was thin and crispy around the edges (again, not my preference, but fine), but the overall flavor is where it really fell flat for me. It was just… fine.
The gluten-free crust was thin and a bit crispier than the Gorm’s one. Christian actually liked the gluten-free pizza a lot; he thought the crust and flavor were good.
Rating: I give the regular pizza a 2.5/5 (sorry!!). Christian gives the gluten-free pizza a 4/5.
Pico
Location: We picked up from Vesterbro, and they also have a Nørrebro location.
Method: takeaway
Flavors: Pico’s concept is to get 3 small pizzas instead of 1 big one, so we got 3 regular pizzas and 3 gluten-free.
Regular crust:
- Margherita
- Capricciosa (with prosciutto, mushrooms, and thyme)
- Sweet Cheesus (4 cheeses, basil, and browned butter)
Gluten-free crust:
- Pepperoni in Disguise (chorizo and peppers)
- Sloppy Joe (bolognese, parmesan, and cheddar)
- Rosemary’s Bacon (sweet potato, bacon, and capers)
Review: We were a little split on this one! I LOVE the concept of the mini-pizzas. They also have my preferred type of crust and I thought all of the regular pizzas had delicious flavor. I am a little obsessed, actually.
Christian was not so sold on the concept. He thought the pizzas were good, but it wasn’t really a fair comparison (I disagree, but hey). He also wanted more sauce on his pizzas.
Rating: I give the regular pizzas 4.5/5!! Christian gave the gluten free pizzas a 3.5 (but I think these were far and away the best GF crusts).
Frankie’s
Location: Frankie’s has several locations. We picked up from Østerbro.
Method: takeaway
Flavors: Pizza of the month (regular crust), Bianco Royale (potato, cheese, mushrooms, and ham, with gluten-free crust), Steak & Bearnaise (gluten-free)
Review: Prior to this, Frankie’s had been our go-to for gluten-free pizza, so we knew what to expect here. We generally think Frankie’s pizzas are really flavorful and tasty, and they didn’t disappoint this time! I will say that the regular Frankie’s crust is a bit crispier than I prefer.
The gluten-free crust… even though we’ve gotten it plenty of times, I hate to say it, but it was clearly the least-good out of the places we tried. The flavor of the pizza is still good, which is why we have gotten it so many times, but the “crust” is just… not really like a pizza crust? It’s clearly more of a vehicle to put the toppings on. And it does the job, but it’s just… fine. That was especially clear after trying these other places where the gluten-free crusts were pretty similar to the regular crusts on offer.
Rating: I give the regular crust a 3.5. Christian gives the gluten-free crust a 3 (but it got a boost because of the toppings).
The winner:
In my opinion, Pico Pizza was by far the best pizza we tried — both the regular and gluten-free options!! My second place would be Frankie’s for regular pizza, and Gorm’s for gluten-free.
Christian’s favorites for gluten-free were Gorm’s and Behov.
So, it seems Gorm’s is our shared winner for the best gluten-free pizza in Copenhagen!! And tbh, I’m happy to eat the regular pizza from there, too.
Have you tried the gluten-free pizzas from these places, or anywhere else? Which is your favorite?
**Note: We wanted to try Il Grappolo Blu, but they were closed during Covid and I couldn’t find a way to order takeaway 🙁 Hopefully we’ll be able to try their pizza another time!
