Weekday morning routine
Does anyone else love reading other people’s morning routines? I posted mine on Tiktok recently, but thought I’d do a more detailed rundown here on the blog!
I also thought it would be fun to document, because I only have a couple weeks left before I go on maternity leave… and I know my morning “routine” is about to change dramatically. (We’ll see how long it takes me to actually have a routine after the baby comes…) So here’s what it looks like currently…
5:45 am: Wake up & bathroom routine
So, I don’t love waking up before 6 am, but I really don’t love being rushed in the mornings. Getting up at 5:45 means I can take my time getting ready and still have plenty of time to get to school and get some work done before my students arrive.
Once I’m up, I start on my “bathroom routine” (I don’t know what else to call it…): brush teeth, skincare, makeup, hair. Here are the products I’m using lately:
Teeth & skincare: Quip toothbrush & toothpaste; Glossier cleanser (I alternate this with my fave Fresh cleanser so I don’t use it up too quickly!!); Thayer’s toner (although I buy this in the US and I’m almost out of it, so I’ll have to switch to something else soon!); Origins moisturizing gel; Glossier sunscreen
Makeup: Glossier Perfecting Skin Tint (in G10), Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Definer (in Dark Brown); Nars High Pigment Longwear eyeliner (in Last Frontier); Glossier Lash Slick mascara; Burt’s Bees vanilla chapstick
And usually I just sleep with my hair in a bun, let it down in the morning, and call it good.
6:15 am: Coffee & meditation
About 3 years ago, my husband wanted to buy this espresso machine, and I thought it was an absolutely ridiculous, over-the-top purchase. (In the US I had something similar to this and was perfectly happy with it!) But we bought it anyway and tbh, I’m glad we did now!! I love that I can have a latte at home every morning. It’s definitely a luxury but the machine was worth the investment for us.
I’ve been doing Headspace meditations for a while and I find it’s a nice way to start the morning. I usually make my coffee first and drink it while meditating… I know that’s probably not the way you’re “supposed” to do it, but I don’t careeeee.
6:30 am: Breakfast & social media
I try not to check my phone at all in the mornings until I sit down for breakfast. I usually listen to a podcast while I’m doing my “bathroom routine” and use the Headspace app to meditate, but I don’t check texts, emails, social media, etc. for the first 45 minutes that I’m up. I use the “Downtime” feature in my iPhone settings to set time limits on most of my apps, so any notifications from overnight don’t pop up until “downtime” ends at 6:30 am. This is definitely a sanity saver and makes my mornings feel a lot more relaxed!
6:50 am: Get dressed
I am not one of those people who picks out my outfit the night before, but since I use capsule wardrobes, I have a limited selection of clothes to choose from each morning, which makes this a quick step for me. (That’s one of the reasons I love capsule wardrobes!)
7:00 am: Out the door
Well, sometimes it’s closer to 7:15 if I’m moving slowly (especially these days when I feel like I’m moving slowly allllll theeee timeeeee thanks to my bump) …. but I aim for 7:00. Then I use my commute time to listen to podcasts and read the news.
Weekends and holidays look very different– I’ve never been able to keep a consistent wake up time or routine when I don’t have somewhere to be in the mornings. But this routine works well for me on school days!
How about you? Are you an early riser or rushing out the door??
